There is nothing better than finding a book that makes you forget everything else you were supposed to be doing.

"Book Tok has made very few points, but this is definitely one of them."

I laughed out loud for a solid minute, and then again while making tea a short while later, and yet again while posting this.

Thank you.

Whistler and Heart The Lover are two of my favorites of this year as well. How sad is it that when we finish a book it feels like the end of a relationship too sometimes. I’m starting to be pro re-reading books I love rather than always finding a new one because it’s just so amazing to jump back into a story and characters I already know are fantastic! Love your list here!

emma's avatar

this is so accurate — i was heartbroken to finish both heart the lover and whistler! there have been times i’ve reread almost as much as i’ve read for the first time for this reason. thank you!

Yes, I felt the same way about In the Woods (I wanted someone to smack some sense into the protagonist) and loved The Likeness!!

I could not put down The Everlasting and, before that, Starling House, both by Alix E. Harrow

if i could drop into the dublin squad i’d have some things to say!!! ooh sounds like i need to try some harrow

the contents somehow live up to the cover!!

great list! i loved heart the lover. i have the likeness on my tbr, do you think it's mandatory that i read in the woods first?

emma's avatar

thank you! they can definitely be read as standalones, but if you have any intention of reading in the woods i’d recommend doing so first!

The interesting thing about French's Dublin Murders series is that each book takes a secondary character from the previous book and makes them the protagonist. Each book can be read as a standalone, but reading the books in order is extra-satisfying due the added layer of backward-forward continuity.

I have a book podcast and we just posted our review of Whistler! we are in total agreement and didn't want it to end. also totally agree re: anything Patrick Radden Keefe. And I gave Sonia & Sonny to so many people for christmas and kept assuring them -- you won't even realize it was 700 pages!! Like being in a movie theater. I also feel that way about Claire Lombardos novels. You're just *in* her world.

I just read All Them Dogs off the booker long list and was completelyyyyyyy consumed by it - I read it in 24 hrs in three long gulps. Highly recommend for anyone after a thriller/neo-noir!!
